About GRATITUDE - #78

“It is through gratitude for the present moment that the spiritual dimension of life opens up.” - Eckhart Tolle

In this world full of infinite complexity, rarely do things happen as planned.

Since discovering meditation and the art of embracing the moment, I have learned that the world is full of opportunity. By pushing past fear and removing my attachment to the outcome, some incredible experiences have been created.

As I was trying to compose a perfect edition on a sunny day in front of the Golden Gate Bridge, it was difficult to align the stones in a way that would look fantastic from the specific angle I desired. After working with the stones for about an hour or two (I lost track of time), I looked out at a large shipping boat as it travelled under the massive red bridge. This triggered a strange “burst” of gratitude. I soon thereafter achieved a balance that was extremely fragile and pushed my skill level to it’s limits.

When I felt the top stone lock into place, I could feel an incredible energy to the sculpture as I let go of the stones. Although the angles didn’t align to the shot I was envisioning, I quickly embraced what I had created and looked at it from another angle. It was then where I saw the spectacular “S” shape of the balance as it overlooked the Pacific.

The sculpture lasted for only 7 or 8 seconds… and those few seconds of balance were intense. As I looked into my camera viewfinder, my focus was razor sharp. It took a split-second to compose the shot, allowing me to take just one photo before the sculpture collapsed from the strong ocean breeze. The single shot turned out to be incredible and something I will always be grateful for.
